Job Description

Position Overview
We are seeking a Finance Lead to oversee and enhance the financial operations of the Federation of Black Canadians. As a key member of our team, the Finance Lead will ensure the integrity and transparency of our financial practices, manage complex budgets, and oversee compliance with all financial regulations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in financial management, a strong understanding of nonprofit and grant-funded environments, and the ability to implement best practices to strengthen our financial processes.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Record Management:

  • Oversee the accurate maintenance of financial records and ensure all data entry is properly recorded.

  • Supervise the use of accounting software (QuickBooks, Dext, Stripe) to ensure the integrity of financial data.

Transaction Oversight:

  • Monitor and document all financial transactions, ensuring accuracy and compliance with organizational policies and standards.

  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of accounts payable and receivable, including regular reconciliation.

Budget and Grant Management:

  • Lead the development and oversight of budgets for various projects and grants.

  • Track and monitor spending, ensuring compliance with grant requirements and organizational goals.

  • Provide guidance on potential financial risks, including under/overspending, and ensure proper allocation of funds.

Financial Reporting & Auditing:

  • Prepare and present comprehensive financial reports, including trial balances, balance sheets, income statements, and other essential reports.

  • Lead the regular review and auditing of financial reports to ensure accuracy, transparency, and compliance with financial regulations.

  • Review financial data for discrepancies and inconsistencies and provide recommendations for correction.

  • Ensure that financial reports are aligned with both organizational and regulatory requirements.

Compliance Assurance:

  • Ensure all financial practices adhere to applicable legal standards, regulations, and internal policies.

  • Prepare and submit required government filings, including quarterly GST/HST returns, tax remittances, and workers' compensation documents.

Process Improvement:

  • Identify and implement improvements to financial processes and systems to increase efficiency and reduce errors.

  • Collaborate with departments across the organization to integrate financial practices with overall operational goals.

Team Collaboration and Leadership:

  • Provide leadership and guidance to other team members on financial matters.

  • Collaborate with the executive team to support strategic financial planning and decision-making.

  • Foster a positive working environment by facilitating communication and teamwork within the finance department.

Grant Accounting and Reporting:

  • Oversee the proper allocation and reporting of grant funding, ensuring that all expenses are documented and reconciled.

  • Assist with the preparation of detailed reports for grant funders, ensuring full compliance with reporting requirements.


Requirements

Qualifications and Skills

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field. CPA, CMA, or other relevant certifications are a BONUS.

  • Experience: 4+ years of experience in financial management or bookkeeping, preferably in a nonprofit or grant-funded organization.

  • Technical Proficiency: Extensive experience with accounting software (QuickBooks, Dext, Stripe) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

  • Auditing & Reporting: Proven experience in auditing financial statements and reviewing financial reports for accuracy and compliance.

  • Analytical Skills: Strong attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret financial data accurately.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present financial data clearly and effectively.

  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead and collaborate with a team, managing multiple priorities effectively.

  • Knowledge: Familiarity with Canadian accounting standards, nonprofit financial management, and grant compliance.

In the very rare occasion, you will be required to work some weekends.
